Has anyone struggled with severe muscle pain several weeks post op from sternotomy? I had no such pain until after week four and it got worse each week. My chest, traps, scapula. My Primary doc prescribed methylprednisolone dosepack which knocked it out on day two but my BP spiked so... Read more.
Maybe some pericarditis in the mix there for the Colchicine? I still have shoulder popping all the time at 5.5 months), but no pain. Our shoulders took a beating with the surgical positioning ... Sending good vibes.
Cardiologist says negative on pericarditis. Many cardiologists are now using colchicine for inflammation. Seems some people have chronic inflammation past the normal 8 week healing period. Lucky me!
Christine, I had a lot of shoulder pain after my surgery but thankfully, Tylenol took care of it. I'm sorry you are having so much pain. I hope it gets better soon.
Thanks Rose. Tylenol does nothing, can't take ibuprofen due to blood thinner. Trying muscle relaxers too.
Hi Christine, I am 5 weeks post-op from my aortic valve redo surgery and like you, experiencing pain - specifically, left shoulder blade and neck pain. My home health PT says it is muscular and from my body’s natural inclination to protect my healing sternum. Like you, I am on... Read more.
When choice was limited, I did Tylenol and topical CBD. Better than nothing, but neither made much dent. Oral steroid, lidocaine patches, and muscle relaxants were not for me, based on past experience. At 8 weeks, surgeon cleared me for chiropractic adjustments and PT. I could have started acupuncture but... Read more.
Great info Yumiko! I have been doing the ice and heat, topical, etc. Temporary relief though. I'm going to be more diligent with the muscle relaxers as I've read they should be taken regularly for maximum effect. My docs disagree on the ibuprofen, one says ok once in a while... Read more.
Thanks Suelynn, I hope we both see some relief soon. This is really debilitating when the pain is at it's peak.
I'm 8 weeks post op. I still have pain around my left shoulder blade area. a couple of weeks ago I found a home recovery guide from UK NHS, it described a few mobility movement. I tried them and it helped a lot! I'm completely off pain med now. Whenever... Read more.

Back in the hospital for the past two days after my MV repair on 3/5. On Monday night my resting HR shot up to 130's and stayed there. Went to the ER thinking it was Afib but I was in sinus rhythm. No SOB or pain. Turned out to be... Read more.

Sorry to hear this. I was pleased at your smooth sailing - hope your clot is resolved soon so you can get back home. HRs of 130 must be ultra frightening !
Glad you got that checked out Christine! Hope you are better and back home soon. Not mitral repair for me but I was given only aspirin to take post surgery
I'm sorry this happened to you. I'm sure it was scary. I was on blood thinners for three months and baby aspirin for a year after my mitral valve repair. It seems to be an individual choice depending on the surgeon. Hopefully, it was an isolated bump in the recovery... Read more.
Glad your doing better Christine, I’m 6 months post op for MV and AV replacement at Cleveland Clinic main. Was on Eliquis for about four months then my cardiologist d-c’d it. Now it’s one aspirin, Entresto, Metoprolol, Jardiance and Spironolactone daily until my next follow up appointment. Remember you gotta... Read more.
Thanks everyone, it's interesting to see the variation between surgeons' opinions regarding this topic!
Glad you are feeling better, sorry you had to go through this. God bless you and continued recovery 🙏❤️❤️‍🩹
I had robotic Mitral valve repair almost two yrs ago. On Aspirin forever due to annuloplasty ring. Aspirin stopped before my aneurysm repair. Plavix for 6 wks now back on Aspirin due to dacron graft and the original MV ring. On Eliquis d/t post op arrythmia issue.
I'm sorry you had this happen but very grateful that it was found. Complications from OHS are the pits! I had my share so I feel for you. Praying you can go home soon and continue your recovery! 🪖❤️‍🩹💪
I know having to go back to the hospital was disappointing & scary. So glad you are ok.
Wow Christine, good for you for not taking any chances! I’m glad they know what it is and are treating it. Thanks so much for sharing—you’re helping all of us be pro-active.
Praying that you continue to feel better. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Glad to hear all is well. Thinking of you.
I was on warfarin for five months after MV repair. I wore a monitor in November that showed no AFib so warfarin discontinued. I take baby aspirin for maintenance. Be well. 😘🙏🏻

MV repair via sternotomy with Dr. Kevin Accola at AdventHealth Orlando on 3/5 was a success and I finally got discharged yesterday (Monday). The first night in ICU I went into AFib but the external pacer got me back into rhythm pretty quickly. Then my BP and HR were too... Read more.

Glad to hear from you. Sounds like things are going very well! Wishing you an easy recovery.
Loss of appetite is common. I only ate soup for a long time. Eat whatever seems appealing and your body, which has been through a lot, will eventually get back to a "normal".
Wonderful! So happy for you Christine! I am glad you survived it all. My biggest fear is waking up with a tube in my throat.
Yay! You did it! Congratulations - sounds like you're doing well. The 3:00 nap was my friend for quite awhile after surgery. You'll get your energy back when your body is ready. Take your time and enjoy those power naps! ❤️
Sounds like an experience many of us can relate to ! (The low BP and fluid push was my exact situation, too) So glad you have made this fast rebound. Keep going. It takes time and patience! Cheers...
Hey Christine, Glad your now on this side of the pre op stress, worry, and head games your mind plays with you. Take Good Care! 💔❤️‍🩹❤️
So happy to hear you are home and doing well! Now on to your best life! ❤️🥰 ❤️.
Day after day you will feel better! Stay positive!
Glad it went well, Christine! Now for a couple of months of letting the sternotomy heal; be patient with it and follow the surgeon's restrictions!
Hey Christine, Woo-Hoo!!!! 👍❤️😊 So happy to hear that Dr. Accola and his team took great care of you. You are on the path to recovery! One day at a time. You got this! If you every need anything, please let me know. I'm here to help!
Great news. Very encouraging to hear, especially for those of us coming up!
Welcome home Christine!! Each day will get a little better and before you know it you'll say one day - "wow, I'm feeling pretty good!" 😘 I am one year and almost three months post aortic valve replacement and feeling g great! I remember feeling like a slug the first... Read more.
Dr. Accola replaced my aortic valve in 2016. Such a humble surgeon. And, don't you love those rooms with that wall of glass.
I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Accola and the entire team at Advent Health Orlando. Dr. Accola is truly a gifted and compassionate, caring surgeon.
Hi Christine. Hope this information helps: I had absolutely no appetite for several days after my mitral valve repair surgery 2 1/2 years ago. Almost everyone was pushing me to eat, but I felt kind of sick when I did. Thank goodness on day 3 a cardiac PA in the... Read more.
I had major pain in the back of my shoulder/neck area after my MVR & septal myectomy. The best thing for me were tiger balm patches (better than the lidocaine patches they gave me in the hospital and the muscle relaxers). The very best thing I did when I went... Read more.
Glad to hear all went well. Best wishes for a problem free and speedy recovery!
Wonderful news! Healing takes time. Be patient. Sending healing prayers!
Happy to hear you’re home and recovering! Thank you for posting what your hospital stay was like. I’m scheduled for Mitral Valve repair on April 10th and your info gave me some idea of what to expect. Sending positive thoughts and hugs😊
I'm so glad you're home and healing. It sounds like you went through a lot with a very positive attitude! Thinking of you! ❤️
Our recovery paths are very similar…..so glad you are recovering beautifully!!!
I'm nine months post-op and feeling great after MV repair. I hope you keep getting better and better and are eating well. My surgeon said good food speeds healing.
