I will be taking my first flight since my open heart surgery 7 months ago. Do the wires in the chest from the surgery set off the metal detectors in the airport ? my surgeon said no they won’t but I was wanting I sight from those that actually have... Read more.

Was no problem for me. I also carry the valve replacement card in my wallet though, just in case…
The metal detectors may not be an issue but for me, at least, the whole-body scanners did pick up the wires. They asked me if I was wearing a necklace. But, they really didn’t want to see the sternotomy scar.
Thank you all!!! I have TSA precheck and a card regarding the device from the repair…also figured the scar would be a good indication but with TSA anymore you just never know.
With my combination of wires and plates, plus a pacemaker,I was concerned about that too.Telling the first TSA agent in line, she said to tell the scanner people,They didn't have a problem with it and said a pat down could be done,if it was uncomfortable to use the x-ray.
Richard, interesting to say the least. Lol
I did not have any problems but keep the card in my wallet just in case.
I have the chest wires and can confirm 👍 he's correct they don't
Full body scanner didn't pick up anything, but did detect high iron in my liver. Have haemochromatosis, as well as aortic valve replacement.
That's interesting William,I didn't expect the scanners to be that sensitive.
I found that interesting , also. Apparently, the liver can store a lot of iron in hemochromatosis!

My mitral valve OHS was Wednesday 1/5/2022 and was a success. My amazing surgeon was able to repair my valve. I spent 24 hours in ICU and was then transferred to a cardiac room and was discharged yesterday to home. I feel really good.
Yay!!! Welcome to recovery, Susan! Sounds like you're doing great! Terrific news!
Good work! You will feel better every day as your body replaces the red blood cells you lost and you get past the immediate surgical wound healing. Do lots of walking/ exercise.
So glad to hear this Susan, congratulations and continued good health and recovery. God bless you
Hope your recovery is complete . Glad your doing great!
