Hi All, does anyone have recommendations for a cardiologist and/or Clinic (for INR testing) in southern Spain (Malaga)? As some of you may remember, our 19yo son had his OHS (AVR) at Cleveland Clinic last December. He is doing fine. And planning to study abroad in Spain early next year.... Read more.
does he have an at home test kit? if not, contact your insurance or a company like Acelis indirectly. they can work with your insurance. with that said, i’ve been told by a VA Coumadine clinic nurse to not use international test strips. he could take a supply with him.... Read more.
Yes, he does. And we will send him with a supply of test strips. He does plan to take a supply of Coumadin. But just in case he needs to fill a prescription it would be nice to have an in country cardiologist

Hi all. 8 days in step down and our son is back in CICU. While waiting for INR to come up they noticed a couple of skipped heart beats so wanted closer supervision. But it’s the elevated white blood cell count that has me concerned. Has anyone experienced this after... Read more.

Elevated white blood count is a well-known occurrence after heart surgery. It is part of the inflammatory response to the surgery and use of cardiopulmonary bypass. That said, they will want to observe him to make sure that is all it is.
My white blood cell count went up after surgery and I received IV antibiotics for about 24 hours.

It took me a week to hit the right INR. Coumadin seems to hit everyone different. Hope all continues to go well for him.
Your son looks great! As Rose said, Welcome to recovery!❤️
Hi Lyle, thanks for the update. I know how hard and helpless it can feel to have a child entering surgery. Thank God he is all well and in recovery-mode. As young as he is at 19 years, he will heal incredibly fast. I also live in VA, and had... Read more.
I wish you and your son a fast and full recovery.
Yes. It can take days/weeks to get your INR in place. It varies from patient to patient and it is normal as your body has to get used to this new med. And INR will continue to go up and down, that's what it does - it is not stable.... Read more.
Great to hear from you, Lyle! Please give our best to your son. Although I didn't have an artificial valve, my surgeon prescribed blood thinners for my first three months of recovery and I was surprised at the initial fluctuations. Your son will acclimate quickly just as Rita described and... Read more.
