So I seemed to be doing great, however My follow up X-ray shows a small pericardial effusion. My cardiologist has recommended Colchis one for a month. Feeling the sadness of a setback but trying to remind myself that it’s temporary.

Sorry that you have to go through this. But alas, almost everyone has a side effect/setback. They are just not spoken about much before surgery so they can surprise/sadden you when they happen. We expect fast perfect results and the letdown feeling is real. I hear you. I got a... Read more.
Sorry to hear about your setback. Hopefully after the month it is all cleared up and you are back on track. 🙏
Rita is spot on. I'm glad they found it and they are taking care of it. It is sad, and frustrating when things don't go as planned. I went in healthy and expected to be out in 5-6 days and back to feeling good in a month or two. I... Read more.
Karen, sorry for the setback. I had a pleural effusion as well so I feel your pain. Hang in there. ❤️‍🩹
Thank you everyone - J Alexander - I had chest pain when breathing in but my PCP felt that was related to costochondritis🤦🏼‍♀️ which is an inflammation in the ribs, so I’m being. Treated for both. Btw - I would definitely not overdo your recovery. Ask me how I know…I’m... Read more.

I’m 3 1/2 weeks post op. In all aspects it appears my recovery is going well, however, I am seriously struggling mentally. I don’t want to do anything that will freak my heart out, but I’m also having a hard time about how much “back to normal activities” I can... Read more.
There is no handbook as we are all different. I always knew when i was overdoing it. My body told me. You can do more than you think. In my eyes, walking is the best way to exercise your heart.
Hey Karen. We are on about the same timeline. I'd say the best advice here is to listen to your body. Some days I do more than others and some days I feel like blah! Please stay positive and any gains big or small are amazing. Stay your course. 👍
Are you going to go to cardiac rehab? I if you have place chosen, it may be they are set up to handle issues such as this, and provide feedback. Certainly when you start there, this is something you could discuss. I am sure this is fairly common. 💕
Hi Karen, I’m 4wks. out and initially was fearful of doing to much especially after an anfib episode. I think heart surgery and recovery is difficult in many ways .Please don’t get discouraged Each day will get better Yesterday I walked 1.25 miles today 1.50 miles. I’m anxious for rehab... Read more.
Thank you - This is comforting to know and it helps a bit - thank you for responding everyone. I’m trying to be patient with myself and also hopeful.
Cardiac rehab helped me tremendously, Karen. The rehab specialists know what is safe and what isn't. I'm 5 months post surgery now, just finished my 36 rehab sessions a few weeks ago. In the beginning I couldn't use my arms and went pretty slow at first, mostly on the treadmill.... Read more.
Karen, 3-1/2 weeks out is still early. Hang in there. You have been given good advice. I didn't do cardiac rehab due to all my complications. I did as much walking as I felt I could. As everyone said, your body will let you know and we are all different.... Read more.
I feel for you. It's hard going back to "life". Everything is different and post-surgery anxiety is real. Cardiac rehab can be helpful. Talking to a therapist about what you've been through can be helpful. Trust yourself. You know your body. I saw my generalist a lot to have someone... Read more.
Oh I remember that. I kept checking my heart rate every 5 min. it will get better as you add more activities slowly. just take your time and do what you can and feel like. Dont compare yourself to anyone because we all heal differently. We all know what you... Read more.

I’m having a hard time figuring out a balance between doing enough activity and doing too much. I feel stuck. I get worrried about pushing myself too much and I find myself trying not to jinx myself when I get a good report on something. Any tips or suggestions?

I always have said you want to be the tortoise 🐢 and not the hare 🐇. And Richard is correct - listen to your body. Have you signed up for cardiac rehab? Many on this site sware by it. Being hooked up to a monitor let's them feel better about... Read more.
No cardiac rehab yet. I’m only 2 1/2 weeks post-op
I would do 3 short walks a day up to a mile each, if I felt up to it. And then increased activity a little bit each week or so
I started cardiac rehab at 3 weeks. When are you starting rebab?
Richard is right about your body will let you know. I have pushed my body and it reacted well, five weeks post surgery. I asked many times leading up to surgery and post surgery for a number but never got one. Trust your body. I have gone over 13 miles... Read more.
No specific advice. Lay low the first month and gradually increase... your instincts will tell you what you are ready for... But I know, the sternotomy incision is always an elephant in the room - too much, more movement, not enough?!
Be easy with yourself. You will find that balance. Allow time to heal. Your body needs it. A day at a time.
There is no right or wrong. You are a singular person and no body is like yours. Do what feels right or do nothing at all. Your heart has been through a lot. Imagine it as a broken leg that needs to heal. Don't overthink things. Trust your instincts.
At 2 1/2 weeks, you might consider taking 5 min. walks 3 x day inside your house. Next week, add another minute or two to each one in between a couple of power naps. Keep your showers short - they were more exhausting than exercise during my recovery. Take it... Read more.
I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op walking about 2000 steps a day. However I completely agree with Richard. Listen to your body and do what feels right☺️
