Just had my 10 month checkup with an EKG. Everything looked good. I’m now on a schedule for seeing my cardiologist in April and my surgeon in September. Wash, rinse, repeat. My exercise ability feels like it’s gotten up to 85 - 90% of pre-surgery. Next up is ECHO &... Read more.
Congratulations on you tenth anniversary. Continued good health and recovery . ❤️🙏
Congratulations John. Are they still keeping you on medications? (Beta blockers,aspirin..)
For my heart, I’m on: Amlodipine, aspirin, losartan, carvedilol (beta blocker), & rosuvastatin. In addition to my valve issue, have CAD that includes a soft plaque on my LAD & chronic high BP. The punchline is my CAD & plaques arn't from high cholesterol. They are from comically low cholesterol.... Read more.
Thanks John. All the best on your continued recovery. 🙏
Good report John. I have my echo at the end of this month (month 11) and I’ll do a 7 day holter. I meet the cardiologist first of June. I’m maybe 70% of back to fitness but I think the beta blocker is what’s holding me up :)

Has anyone else had their spouse or partner tell them that they are different post-surgery? I don’t think I’m any different but my wife thinks I’m more mellow and patient than I was before surgery.
Not surprised! It is a life-altering experience! Makes you think that a lot of things are just not as important as you once thought..
My wife says i am crabbier after surgery. I disagree, i have always been a sweetheart. Also not very patient but never was.
My wife didn't say that I changed. Having said that, I am trying to be more laid back. Trying not to let things bother me as much and concentrate more on family. I am still getting irritated if people waste my time or driving 50 in a 25 but I... Read more.
Now your insurance co needs to go after his. I would sue his insurance co.
I never had to do this but supposedly our insurance will now go after the other person's insurance. The only thing I am worried about is that our insurance will increase premiums and won't give us back the deductible. I am not too much worried about the $500 deductible, though.... Read more.
My hospital still has $18k pending insurance payment from my surgery 9 months ago but they aren’t planning to bill me any additional.
One of the few good things about massachusetts is the state run insurance board. Normally i hate everything government. I used them as leverage when an insurance co of a person that drove into my house failed to pay my insurance co after they reimbursed me. My insurance co was... Read more.
John - Are you taking any medications since your release? Many of them slow your heart rate which can make you feel a little mellow. As Marie said, it's also a pretty big deal to have heart surgery - it absolutely can affect your perspective.
I’m not currently taking anything for my heart now that I hadn’t taken before the surgery but my dosages are up. They did that to get my BP down to 105 from about 135. My arthritis meds are different now.

At 8.5 months after my surgery, I’m finally starting to have brief moments when my thumbs and first two finders (both hands) feel normal. Until now, those six fingers have been numb and tingly all the time.

Hi John !! Great news, any trembling and did anyone give you a diagnosis?
Melinda, it’s been a while. How are you? My nerves were pinched because of positioning during surgery. Apparently it happens to 5 - 10% of the time. I also have a numb patch under my chin that makes shaving feel weird. I haven’t had trembling, just fingers “asleep”. But between... Read more.
Wow !! It’s helpful to hear this and wish you continued . I am seeing a pt 3x’s a week for similar issues.
That is great news and very encouraging. Have you been doing any special exercises, therapy, or steroids (like a medrol dose pack or injections at the wrist like for carpal tunnel)? An orthopedic hand surgeon did a few steroid injections at the joints in my fingers & base of the... Read more.
For me, since the numbness wasn’t severe, it’s just been something I’ve endured. I was more obsessive with my ability to exercise and dealing with edema. The only injection I’ve had is on a trigger-finger knuckle that is related to my arthritis, not this numbness. The trigger-finger predated my surgery.... Read more.
Hi John -- Glad you are improving! I had a Ross Procedure June 2nd at Vanderbilt after replacing my native BAV 11 1/2 years ago. I feel like I did well overall with the procedure, but because of compressed nerves in my neck, my thumb and two fingers would go... Read more.
Hi.! I had carpal and cubital tunnel surgery both elbows and wrists before surgery and also 5 trigger surgery releases. I went thru the whole journey of steroid shots in fingers and wrist and nothing worked. Surgery helped but after ohs it worsened and the numbness returned and a bit... Read more.
John why is it numb under your chin? Jeffery did you have hand issues before surgery ?
I don’t know why under my chin on the right side is numb. I didn’t discover it until I shaved for the first time because the port for my juggler took a long to heal. It was a couple of months before I noticed it. My suspicion has always been... Read more.
Maureen, we had our Rosses on the same day. That’s cool. Good luck with your PT.
Yes, thanks John! Did you end up with plates? If so, what kind? They are supposed to be better for shoulder mobility than just wires (like I had the first time) -- but yes, working through the pulling in my shoulders! There are some neuro-movement exercises that I recently found... Read more.
I don’t think I have plates. I think I got rings. I already have a screw in one shoulder, so my mobility there has already taken a hit.
