A big thank you to Adam for his interview with Dr. Johnston regarding radiation heart disease. It was so informative and addressed some really important issues regarding the presentation of heart disease in patients like me and the best treatment approaches. Well done!

Hi Miriam, fellow Virginian. Glad to see that you are doing well and giving forward! 😎
Thanks, Deena! I hope you are doing well. I've had many peaks and valleys with my recovery but I think I'm getting there!

Hi everyone. I was hoping to get some input about my Afib. I developed Afib after my surgery (replacement of mitral and aortic valves, repair of tricuspid, aortoplasty), which was 5 months ago. I've taken metoprolol since then for rate control but it hasn't worked. Just did a 3 day... Read more.
My situation is different but I was told by my surgeon that I might have to see an electrophysiologist or whatever they are called. Basically, they will go to your heart through a blood vessel and scare your heart to adjust the electrical path. It's about a 1.5h procedure and... Read more.
Hi Miriam, I think you saw my post to Alex re: Amiodarone/Cardioversion - the only thing I would add to that is that I believe I did get a side effect, not dangerous but I woke up one morning with very blurry vision in one eye only. Eye Doctor said... Read more.
Thanks, Robert. I had a stroke about two weeks after my surgery from the Afib and so I'm on Eliquis, which has, so far, worked well at preventing further clots. The electrophysiologist discussed the Watchman procedure with me, which involves putting a device into the atrial appendage that blocks any... Read more.
Many thanks, Louise, and you are so correct about the sudden onset of cataracts as being a side effect. I've read that several places. I'll be extra vigilant about watching for that since you experienced it. I'm glad you didn't experience anything else. I've read horror stories about terrible nausea... Read more.
Dear Miriam, I have no experience in taking amiodarone, but I know it has some quite usual and significant side effects after longer taking, but I presume you won't be taking it long, especially if cardioversion is planned and it succeeds ... Anyway, they will monitor your thyroid etc during... Read more.
Thanks, Klara! You're right, I'm hoping I won't be on it long. I was told it would be for about a month after the cardioversion. If neither works, I'll have the ablation procedure Robert mentioned. I'm so sorry you had such severe symptoms with Afib and you with young children!... Read more.
Hi Miriam. I had Afib and Aflutter off and on after surgery for about six weeks. I was very symptomatic and ended up being hospitalized each time I went into it. I was on Amiodarone this whole time and on the final readmission, I refused it. They then put me... Read more.
I haven't read much about the "shock procedure" but from the very limited information I have the results are questionable (not long lasting). Again, I didn't research this so don't take my word for it. I could be completely off on this one. Seriously! I never heard of the watchman... Read more.
Thank you, Robert, those are very good thoughts. I didn't have Afib before surgery so they didn't remove the appendage while they were in there. As you know, Afib is common after valve surgery and often goes away on it's own with Metoprolol and they did try external pacing while... Read more.
Hi Louise, Thank you for your input. I'm hoping for the same outcome you had. I'm trying to be optimistic but I don't want to stay on the Amiodarone long term. As I mentioned to Robert, I'm trying to avoid a procedure that's complicated, such as the Watchman. I'm not... Read more.

About three days after I got home from Cleveland, I was hospitalized with Covid pneumonia and spent 5 days in the hospital. I was treated with steroids and Remdesivir. I couldn't take Paxlovid because I'm on coumadin but what I was given worked and I'm much, much better. Now I can... Read more.
Miriam! I'm so glad you're better! May the road to recovery be smoother from here on out!
Miriam, oh gosh, have you been "tested". Seems like the "drama" and unexpected turns are over and you can gain some strength, sleep and have your mind and heart more at ease. Enjoy cardiac rehab, when it does happen. I had my surgery in NYC at Sinai, but my cardiac... Read more.
Wow! That's a double whammy for sure. Glad you are getting through it.
What surgeon did you have at Cleveland? I was/am considering it for Dr. Gillinov. He does robotic surgery but someone else told me that because I had open heart surgery before robotic/minimal invasive surgery is not an option. I am glad things did go great! I wish you a great... Read more.
Miriam, you are an extremely strong heart warrior. Keep up the good fight. Your doing so well getting through every hurdle thrown at you. Take it easy and continued good health moving forward. God bless you 🙏
Sorry you had to experience that nasty Covid!! Hope the rest of your recovery is smooth and easy…
How unlucky for you to get COVID and pneumonia but thank god you are on the mend. So happy you are feeling better.
Miriam, what a journey you’re powering thru… may God continue to be with you and tour your husband and heal you 🙏
Miriam, I am so very happy to see how well you are doing, and have gone through so much but come out strong! My last echo stress tect for my moderate to severe Tricuspid regurgitation showed it is staying the same, so stil in wait mode for now. It gives... Read more.
