Hello All! I thought I was doing well, had mitral valve repair in January 2024. My echo in May 2024 showed trace regurgitation. Just got another echo and it’s showing mild to moderate regurgitation. Needless to say, I’m scared. I’m scared of another surgery and what this means? I have... Read more.
Michele, it's easy for me to say be don't assume the worst. It could be that they will watch it for a while. You had a good surgeon. I've learned that a lot depends on the echo technician. Try to stay positive and please let us know what the doctor... Read more.
I can very much relate. If you want to discuss, you can reach me at hufaunder at yahoo dot com. I ended up with a second surgery. It was easier because I had more time for decisions, I knew what to expect, etc. I hope your TTE or possibly TEE... Read more.
It could be an issue with the chords slipping (chords are tightened /adjusted in this surgery approach)... Or it could stabilize. Some postmitral surgery patients are managed with meds when regurgitation happens. Hard to know what is happening without more data. Let us know what happens on the 15th.
Thank you everyone!! I really appreciate it! Rose, you’re absolutely right about how the echo technician reads it! I’m actually sending everything to the surgeons nurse practitioner so they can review it. I know in the past the reads have been different. My cardiologist is at UCSD and my surgeon... Read more.
Hello All! I just spoke to my surgeon they watched my entire echo and said it’s mild not moderate! So I will just be on the yearly echo and visit unless anything changes. Thank you so much for your messages they eased my mind while I waited to hear!!! Rose... Read more.

I have also dealt with this. I had my surgery 7-1/2 years ago. I've always had the auras and ocular migraines but seem worse since surgery. In fact, I had one today. My cardiologist said to see an eye doctor, so I did. He said the Vitreous Gel thins as... Read more.
Thank you so much! This makes me feel so much better!! My optometrist mentioned getting a referral to an ENT to look at my vestibular system? I am just wondering what the correlation with heart surgery is? My cardiologist that I see, couldn't answer! My optometrist said she had a... Read more.
Michele, I had some dizziness, mild headache, and nausea side effects from metoprolol. Everyone is different, but I needed to encourage my cardiologist to take me off metoprolol since I had no episodes of a-fib since the day after surgery (1year ago). Just one data point in case it helps.
I was on metoprolol and amiodarone which was making me feel terrible! But I have been off for 7 months. The visuals started right after surgery, which the cardiologist said could be from the medication. They are not as bad, but still there.
I have the exact same thing as you Michelle. I had them before my surgery and it seems to have worsened since my surgery. I have been to numerous Neurologists in NYC and North Jersey. They push pills to help which none have. It is just a bad chronic migraine... Read more.
Totally non expert opinion, but the act of being on bypass and all of the drugs and blood products wreck havoc on our brains and nervous system after surgery. Being on pump is not good for the brain. How long was your robotic surgery? What was the time on pump... Read more.
I also got them after surgery but never before. They are less often now after 2 years
I am a month and a half post op for AV. I am have similar issues My intervention cardiac Dr. Said it is common do to increase blood follow to blood vessels. I am see eye dr. In few weeks. They tell me this will improve.
Thank you everyone! I really appreciate it! Makes me feel way more at ease knowing I am not alone! I just had an MRI done so waiting on those results!!!
I have had ocular migraines my whole life but after mitral valve replacement I started getting them every few days instead of a few times a year. The difference was I was only getting the aura and not the headache. Neurologist said it could be low electrolytes and put me... Read more.
Really glad I ran across this post. Ever since I went into a fib and heart failure 2 years ago, I was put on Metoprolol, Eliquis, Diltiazem and Amiodarone. Not long after, I started having abrupt onsets of double vision and staggering dizziness. Was told it was the meds causing... Read more.

Hello all!!! I am almost 7 months post op mitral valve repair and feeling great!!! Back to my daily activity and even getting to surf with my daughter again, something I couldn’t do before surgery because I was so out of breath! I did have affib twice right after surgery... Read more.

I had Afib off an in for about six weeks after surgery. Drinking either was never mentioned to me. I don't imbibe in any alcohol so that's a non issue for me. Oddly, after my surgery, I only have wanted one cup of coffee a day. I'm no doctor but... Read more.
Thank you Rose!!! I’m not a drinker just like the occasional glass of wine out to eat !!! I do miss coffee but have somehow adjusted to decaf ok 😆
I had a flutter after surgery and my doc says two glasses of wine is okay. I had the aortic valve replaced. Enjoy France.
Everything in moderation. I've always had both wine and coffee. And coffee was served in hospital. Enjoy.
Hi Michelle - when I was in step-down ICU after my surgery, my nurse sneaked me a cup of strong coffee from the staff lounge... the cafeteria had been sending me decaf.
We wee ordering from Starbucks in recovery as the coffee was real bad at Duke.
Michele, congrats on feeling great at 7 months! Haven't had surgery yet, but will be sure to ask about the coffee & wine.
