At 5 weeks post-op, I had my first in-person post-op visit. During the visit, I was given clearance to resume driving. I waited a few days and decided to run an errand staying within a 2 mile radius of my home. My goodness - I was surprised by how uncomfortable... Read more.
I waited 8 weeks to drive. Then my husband got tired of driving me around so I started again. It got better as I did it more. I think you have to take the doctors advice as a guideline because everyone is so different.
I think I was 8 weeks too. It was a little uncomfortable so I figured out how to steer without a lot of movement😊
I waited 8 weeks also. Having been through 5 weeks of cardiac rehab at that point really helped me get comfortable driving again.
I agree it was surprisingly difficult to steer at first. It gets better fast. I think I first drove at 4 weeks. It was more psychological than actual ability to do anything.
Thanks everyone for sharing. During my pre-op visit I was told 6-8 wks. So, I was surprised to get clearance at 5 wks. I have a teenager who is learning to drive. It looks like we'll both be practicing in a parking lot this weekend. 😊
I was six weeks and felt pretty much like you. Nervous, but mostly because it had been awhile. I started close to home, a mile or two. Then I ventured the longer drive to rehab during the least traffic time of day to get more comfortable. Now at 8 weeks... Read more.
This is good information, so thanks, everyone, for sharing. I am 6-weeks post op today. When I saw my surgeon last week, he cleared me to drive; however, I have not attempted it yet. I think a few test runs close to home will be in order.
Turning my head to look out my rear window surprised me the most. Still is different 8 months post-op.

I'm finally posting my Journal after-the-fact (4 weeks post-op). I was too nervous to post anything, but I found such comfort from so many of you sharing your stories and being so very transparent about your experiences. Here's my experience in hopes that it can help someone else. Sorry, it's... Read more.
Thanks, Leti, for the perspective and flow of your experience. As someone headed for this, it is nice to know what to expect so there are no surprises. Indeed, it sounds like the recliner can be a key asset - like it or not - during those first weeks of... Read more.
Leti, I sure appreciate your story and the details. I am glad you now have a beautiful repair! ❤️
Leti - I also silently watched this site and didn't create an account until surgery was behind me. You have done a wonderful job chronicling your heart journey - it will bring tremendous comfort to the heart warriors in the waiting room. One of the most important parts of your... Read more.
I received a sternotomy. During my pre-op visit, I inquired about the right side thoracotomy, but I got the impression the sternotomy presented the least risk and the quickest healing time. It allowed the surgeon to go in and see clearly everything he needed to see visually and not via... Read more.
Thanks all for the kind words and encouragement. Good luck to you all on your continued journey.
Welcome to recovery Leti! ❤️‍🩹 Congrats on your successful repair. Sleepless nights can really deplete your energy. So glad to hear your are feeling better ❤️
Leti, great report. Sounds like you have a good support system. Listen to what Susan said - she said it well! 😉
Wow! Fantastic detail of what you went thru. Guessing we all appreciate it. I certainly do. Thank you!
Thank you so much Leti, and best wishes for the next steps
So glad everything went well Let! It is definitely helpful to hear everyones personal experience. Recovery is different for everyone and you are doing great!!!❤️
And you for all the information, Leti! I think doctors (especially surgeons) minimize the difficulties and pain of recovery when talking to you pre surgery. I appreciate the reminder that everyone’s experience is different. It’s also a reminder that sleep is important and I should just ask for medication if... Read more.
Leti, thank you for a really helpful post! It really helps to have a detailed description of the surgery day and the ICU period.
Sending warm wishes your way, Jennifer. Good luck on Monday! Regarding my pain, my medical team did mention the pain and they were insistent that I stay on top of the pain and ask for meds when needed. I think my pain was more intense because I was given Oxycodone... Read more.
Thanks for sharing your journey, Leti, Glad to hear that you are finally feeling better. Everyone's recovery is different, so it's always helpful to hear varied stories and perspectives.
Thank you Leti - I appreciate your explanation. I very much agree on the merits of sternotomy, and have picked the same! There is a recent meta analysis to this effect I found. Did you utilize the morphine pump on those first nights - I'm curious if it zapped the... Read more.
Great to hear you are feeling better. Thank you for such a detailed account of your experience. I have not been scheduled yet but I am trying to absorb as much information as I can and this is extremely helpful!
Thank you for posting your details of your surgery. I have s many questions and I really feel like not knowing the answers is scary. My surgery is at the end of November. I have had people make comments like “it’s no big deal” but it is…. ❤️❤️
J Alexander, I didn't have a morphine pump. It wasn't offered as an option. While in the ICU, I couldn't tolerate the Oxy, which is why they administered the Toradol with the Tylenol. I do think they were planning to give me the Tylenol regardless. Good luck to you!
Kath, heart surgery is a big deal. However, as you can tell from this community, everyone has a very different experience. I think it's normal to be scared, but don't let it paralyze you from getting answers. During my final pre-op visit, I had a list of more questions. I... Read more.
Hi Leti, Awesome, detailed summary. I could barely remember my first two days:) Your idea to have them draw the human body and show all the "insertion" points was clever. Great lesson learned. Keep the strolls" up! Hope that you will be entering cardiac rehab or perhaps you are already... Read more.
