One of 10 sternum wires removed on Tuesday- Surgery went well but there is more pain then I expected.
Yes, those wires are deep into your sternum. I am sure you are uncomfortable…
Hard to believe they leave those in you. Yikes, I'd probably have an allergic reaction to it knowing me! Hope you feel better quickly🙏
Thanks for sharing pic of your wire Deb. It's interesting to see the size of it and the twist. I'm amazed I don't "feel" them all the time, though I do have occasional twinges that I imagine have something to do with my wires. Hope you are feeling more comfortable... Read more.
Deb I am so glad I saw your note today. I have surgery next Thursday April 10th and I have a huge metal allergy so wondering about removal. The surgeons said they could be removed later if I have a problem with the metal. When I broke my ankle, All... Read more.
I had a constant dull pain in my sternum and had my sternal wires removed as well. Much more pain after the procedure than I expected. When I reported this to the surgeon, I was shocked at the response as she was almost accusing me of wanting opiates. Pain gradually... Read more.
I’ve developed a lump at the top end my incision. I’m having my wires removed on Tuesday. The CT scan showed fluid over the wires but also lymph enlargement that concerns them (And me). Another thing to worry about.

Has anyone had their sternum wires removed? Mine are coming out next Tuesday at Mayo. Lots of poking and inflammation

I heard from a couple of people on this forum that had them removed. If I recall correctly, the wires were "sticking out". I have two wires that protrude some but not to the point where I would ask for them to be removed.
Hi Deb, Allen Carkner recently had his removed. You could find his posts about it in his Journal using the find members feature. Wishing you the best in your upcoming procedure. I imagine you will be feeling much more comfortable in a few weeks.
Hi Deb you had exact surgery valve replaced and root replacement. Mine was April 10, 2023 at Rochester Mayo too. I have nickel allergy so no sternum wires they had to use like medical grade almost twist ties. I hope it goes good for you.
Thank you everyone also Adam for posting that video.
I did have mine removed and believe it provided some relief. I think some physiological relief and physical relief due to them being so palpable under my skin and with hugs and lying on my chest.
It's got to feel better then now. How was the pain after having them removed. I'm 65 and I thought the open heart surgery was the worst pain I've ever felt and recovery/rehab was tough so I'm not worried about the wire removal. I'm sure there is some pain involved... Read more.
Very mild compared to the open heart surgery. Certainly tender for a week or two though.
