I had my aortic valve replaced on January 30th of this year. It was replaced with a mechanical valve.

Laurie, I managed to overdo with some motions a few weeks in and became very sore for a couple of weeks. It seems things can become tender very easily. Hope you feel better soon.

I had my aortic valve replacement surgery a week ago tomorrow and am so happy it is over. Having read Adam's book and having had advice from any people on here there really were no surprises.

Enjoy the game! I'm originally from Quebec, Canada. I also felt so happy it was over...the anxiety is overwhelming. I hope you have a quick recovery! Try to walk as much as you can, it helps to heal quicker! good luck!

Alas, just because one is exhausted doesn't mean one can sleep! It is still so very early for you Laurie, so take it easy and nap in the afternoon if you can.

What did you all take to the hospital? I am thinking of taking the bare minimum the day of my surgery (health card, heart pillow, toothbrush, toothpaste, bra in larger band size, housecoat, slippers and a pair of underwear or boxers). I figure I can leave a second bag for... Read more.

You won't wear underwear for a couple of days at least. You'll have a foley to drain your bladder. My hospital (Cleveland Clinic) gave me a heart pillow and two surgical bras (one larger, one next size down). You won't need much while you're in ICU. My hospital allowed phone... Read more.
Earplugs, eye mask, extension cord for phone charger, and chapstick.

I didn't really need or use anything from home while in ICU. After I was moved to the CCU, I didn't use much except for my hairbrush, toothbrush, underwear, phone and long charging cord, eye mask, a travel pillow (made sleeping at an incline much more comfortable), and noise cancelling... I appreciate this conversation, since I had not given this subject much thought. Now I have some good ideas to think about, and it will help me in planning for my hospital visit.
In ICU I was allowed nothing (5 days) and to be honest didn't want anything. After that, a loose t-shirt and some loose pants (you can wear them to the hospital) and a toothbrush and something to tie your hair back. That's about it really. I couldn't read or watch... Read more.
You have a good idea and great plan Laurie! All I used was toothbrush+paste, hairbrush, phone+charger, post-op bra (there are a few out there), slippers. Whilist in Hospital I used their soaps, gown, undies, fem products (which is needed for menstrualating women), compression socks etc. I went home in loose... Read more.

Hi Phyllis, I was aware of them post-op but not the night before. It's not abdominal surgery so I don't know why they want that. Anyone else hear of this?
