I’ve had a moderate mitral valve leak for about 20 years now. About eight months ago I found out that my left atrium was severely enlarged, which was bad enough. Now my left ventricle went from mild wall stiffness to moderate stiffness. I had a stress test that came out... Read more.
I suspect a leak always affects things elsewhere. The atrium enlargement is pretty common as it tries to compensate for the leak. No sense being bitter about the past, its the past. Look to the future and approach your doctor with a “ what are you waiting for” line. Or... Read more.
I did get another opinion when my left ventricle was in mild dysfunction. He sent me back to my current doctor. I have been asking about repair for years. I’m going to say what you suggested what are you waiting for next month. I value your opinion about bitterness. I... Read more.
First off, have a nice thanksgiving. When you were in mild stage, they never get worked up. But as my cardiologist once said, the valve does not get better on its own. I was then at the moderate to severe border stage and i wanted a repair as my #... Read more.
Sounds too familiar... You want to act quickly. Based on your description, this seems to be somewhat acute, i.e. a sudden worsening. If your valve malfunctions, your heart will try to compensate to keep you alive but with considerable side effects. You don't want those side effects to worsen. I... Read more.
I contacted Adam a while ago and I think it's still not possible to send a PM, unfortunately. I don't like to share too much personal information on a semi-public forum but your situation is pretty similar to mine. Hence, if you have any question, let me know.

I have a mitral valve regurgitation that is moderate. I found out on my recent echo that my left atrium is severely enlarged probably caused by cardiomyopathy. My doctor says I’m fine. That doesn’t seem right to me. I feel good. But I’m anxious that we should be doing something... Read more.

Boy, if anyone ever needed a second opinion, its you. Someone in california on this site can give you some ideas. Adam lives in california.
I agree with Richard. I always recommend a second opinion even if you feel you comfortable with a first opinion. Your heart is your life engine, don't trust it to one professional opinion.
Do get a second opinion. It is possible that all you need is close monitoring for now, but make sure you monitor for any signs of symptoms. I had mild mitral valve stenosis for decades, was monitoring it regularly, lapsed during covid, went into afib, thought I was just out... Read more.
I would recommend to consult with surgeon. Early intervention can avoid risk of unrecoverable heart damage per my experience. My left atrium was severely enlarged and my heart had been monitored annually. It eventually led to AFib and blood clots in heart. That made my heart EF dropped to below... Read more.
Thanks everyone. I am getting a TEE and heart cath next month. Now my left ventricle is moderate dysfunction.
