Sorry you have to deal with it- makes me wonder if it caused me problems before but I didn’t make the connection. I think it will wear off over time - at least I hope so!

John, did you get the Pfizer vaccine? I read on their vaccine information sheet under the "Side Effects" section that some people experienced heart issues. Hi all, wondering if anyone else has dealt with a reduced ejection fraction after mitral valve repair surgery. I had surgery in Dec 2020. As of my last echo in 12/21 the EF was 50% down from 60%+ before surgery though up from 42% right after surgery. Due for another... Read more.
Dear John, I had a repair very recently and my EF went from 60 before to 50% after the surgery which is expected. I hope with time it will rise... It depends on so many factors, mainly the status of ventricle muscle on which our faulty valve has layed stress... Read more.

I note that for mitral valve patients, the EF beforehand can be deceiving. EF measures how much of the left ventricle is ejected or pumped out, BUT it doesn’t care whether it goes in the correct direction. I have read in studies that this this happens sometimes... I think the EF before surgery can be falsely high, or deceiving, like Thomas said. And then with time, it can improve after surgery. It sounds like it has improved since your surgery, so that is promising.

Thanks for all the comments. I had another follow up echo done and my EF is still 50 and there are some heart wall abnormalities. I think bottom line there was probably damage due to the MVP. Thanks again for the notes!
