Honestly I just watch the greens, I don't eat straight spinach, broccoli, kale. I do eat salad but make sure it includes some iceberg and not huge portions. I use broccoli in recipes, like pasta con broccoli and beef and broccolI. But I do watch portions. My INR has been pretty stable for over 9 months.

Hi Marilyn, I've been told "consistency" is the key too like Charles and like Clare stay away from Kale, spinach, spouts and broccoli. I do iceberg, but very sparingly more like a condiment verses a salad. Also, stay away from grapefruit, cranberry and mango juices. Also soy products and canola too. I got a list of high K content and swore off those and use some low K's with limits and my numbers have been really good, 2.4. I'm 3 weeks tomorrow post op AVR. There is a cookbook for Blood thinners, but it was kind of expensive. I use AHA cookbook and sub out the high/med K contents. I had beef stew yesterday and will be having taco's tonight. I will try to find the links later today. Don't be surprised if he does not want to eat right away. It took me a week plus to start enjoying food, but now I even get hungry and try new things. Your husbands diet will pretty much be what it was before. They (pro-time clinic) just ask that you don't pig out on high vitamin k veggies. If say ya'll eat some sort of greens once or twice a week just keep it the same every week so the dose will remain stable. Exercise and any kind of tobacco products will lower the inr. Alcohol will raise the inr. Basically the only over the counter pain killer that can be taken is tylenol. It might take some time to get his inr somewhat stable. I say that because I have been trying for 10 mo. and mine always fluctuates from 2.0-3.5. My range recommended by my cardiologist is 2.5-3.5. I'm usually in range 90% of the time. They call me a straight shooter at the clinic, I don't smoke, drink alcohol, and watch my vitamin k diet close. They deal with quite a few patients that don't adhere to their demands, but it is the V.A. Hospital. Uncle Sam use to give us free cigarettes, you could smoke anywhere on base or ship even when working, and if you didn't drink like a fish you were an outcast. Now every doctor you see at the V.A. is hounding you to quit smoking and drinking. I guess its better late than never. :-)
