Hi! I am 51 years old and 5 weeks away from the Ross Procedure by Dr. El-Hamamsy at Mount Sinai (originally planned at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago). I’ve lived with a heart murmur all my life - it never stopped me from being an athlete. Four months ago, I chose a new PCP who immediately put me on blood pressure medication and immediately ordered an echocardiogram. I’ve never had BP issues in the past (that I knew of) and always thought I had a strong and healthy heart (even though it murmured). In July, during my first visit with a cardiologist to discuss the echo results, I was stunned to hear my diagnosis: severe aortic stenosis and dilated aorta most likely due to a bicuspid aortic valve. Prognosis: heart surgery during my lifetime. The doctor kept saying “I’m sorry” - and it felt like I was given a death sentence. I reached out to Northwestern for a second opinion and the diagnosis was confirmed. I met with Dr. Narang (cardiologist) and Dr. Malaisrie (surgeon), who both advised for surgery to occur within the next few months. I after some more research, I chose Dr. El-Hamamatsu to do the Ross Procedure because of his extensive experience. I am blessed with a community of friends who are raising me in prayer.
