Hi Karen! I’m actually doing good! I’m 8 weeks post surgery, still a little sore but feel like I can do almost all I did before surgery. I am like you, I found out about my severe aortic stenosis on October 2nd (I fainted which prompted the echo) and had surgery on November 9th. It was a whirlwind of emotions for my family and I during that month. I was extremely scared and nervous, but my surgeon and the team made me feel very comfortable. I’m not gonna lie the first couple days after surgery were hard but the pain meds help! I think the hardest thing for me at first was having to rely on someone for everything! I’m very independent but you have to rely on the nurses and care team to help you in the hospital. My family was very supportive which helps also. It gets a little lonely in the hospital, but take that time to rest and let your body heal. I had to rely on my family and their help when I went home. You’ll get tired easily but I listened to my body and when I was tired, I took a nap. Sleeping was the hardest for me because I normally sleep on my side I needed to sleep on my back and elevated. I have a wedge pillow and that helps. I think what helps the most is having a positive outlook on the process! I really didn’t have a choice, I had to have the surgery so I could go on with living. Everyday I felt a little better and a little stronger. I would say around 4 weeks I was able to do a little more for myself also. But if you have help, take it! My kids very much have babied me but that is because they were so worried but I’ll take it for all I’ve done for them, haha! You’re gonna get through this and you will feel better!
