About Me

I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse in 2013. My PCP heard the heart murmur, and as I was having no symptoms, we took the watch and monitor approach. Yearly echo over time showed some moderate regurgitation, and moderate left atrial enlargement, but good ejection fraction and no ventricular changes. The diagnosis of a “floppy” mitral valve was reported , but I still had no symptoms and could do anything I wanted with no problems. Moving into 2025, I had my first afib attack. I was surprised to have had this happen as I was going along so well and without any symptoms. I went to the ER and went back into sinus rhythm quickly. Unfortunately, I have had more arrhythmias, and had to have a cardio version several weeks ago. A TEE 2 weeks ago confirmed the diagnosis of Barlow’s mitral valve, with moderate mitral valve regurgitation. The diagnosis is the mitral valve and left atrial enlargement are the cause of the arrhythmias. I am presently on Multaq anti arrhythmic medication which seems to have controlled the afib so far. I am noticing some fatigue after being on my feet for extended periods, as well as getting visual auras which has been disconcerting. I have an upcoming visit with the thoracic surgeon to discuss options. Will update over time. I greatly appreciate this site and the opportunity to get information and support as I continue my valve journey. Thanks to Adam and everyone!
