I have had Mitral Valve Prolapse since I was 19 years old. I have taken some type of medication for years to slow my heart rate. I had taken Digoxin for the past 10 years. My pharmacist had suggested I talk to my Dr about switching to a different medication as Digoxin could potentially be dangerous. I was sent to a cardiologist and he done an echo. One week later, I received the news that I had severe mitral regurgitation and needed heart surgery. Needless to say, my husband and I were in shock. That was about a month ago. I was told by my neighbor (which used to be a cardiac nurse) that this procedure could be done with minimally invasive surgery. I went for a consult with a heart surgeon and he informed us that here locally, this procedure was only done through open heart surgery. I go next week on Wednesday for a stress test and T.E.E. Dr told me that these test would help determine if mitral valve could be repaired rather than replaced. This is all new to me and my family. So any advice would be greatly appreciated.
