St. Bernardine Launches Heart Valve Clinic Microsite!
I am very excited to announce that the Inland Empire Heart & Vascular Institute at St. Bernardine Medical Center just launched a new Heart Valve Clinic Microsite at HeartValveSurgery.com. So you know, many patients from our community -- including Fred Stieg, Eugenie Magana and Charlene Wasson -- have had great surgical outcomes at St. Bernardine.
If you didn't know... St. Bernardine has been performing open heart procedures for more than 50 years. To see their new microsite, please click here.
Another interesting fact is that St. Bernardine is one of the largest cardiac programs in Southern California. During 2013, the St. Bernardine team performed over 700 open heart procedures including the full spectrum of valve therapies -- including mitral valve repair and aortic valve replacement.
To help you learn more about St. Bernardine, I filmed this video during a recent visit to the St. Bernardine Medical Center campus.
Many Thanks to St. Bernardine Medical Center!!!
On behalf of our patient and caregiver community, many thanks to the entire team at St. Bernardine for supporting this project! A special thanks goes out to Dr. Davtyan, Dr. Gibson, Dr. Malki, Dr. Mudge, Dr. Mukherjee, Stan Rucker, Ed Langdon, Kimberly VandenBosch, Stephanie Johnson and Anamaria Bearden for becoming our newest sponsor!
Keep on tickin!
P.S. For the people in our community who are hearing impaired, I have provided a written transcript of the video below.
My name is Ashis Mukherjee. I'm an interventional cardiologist and I'm the Director of the Inland Heart and Vascular Institute at St. Bernardine's. I've been practicing medicine since 1991. I have conservatively performed over 10,000 cardiac procedures. St. Bernardine's has been performing cardiac surgeries for more than 50 years. We do over 700 open hearts a year. We do over 8600 diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures and over 3600 echocardiograms.
It's a little known fact, but St. Bernardine's has been, in the Inland Empire, doing cardiac procedures the longest and currently does the highest volume in the Inland Empire, and probably the second-highest volume in all of southern California. It's a very busy cardiac catheterization laboratory and we have five labs and we have dedicated crew that have been with us - some employees as long as I have been here. The number of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons on staff number close to 40. We cover the entire spectrum of cardiac procedures and cardiovascular surgery.
If you're a valve patient, the first thing you should know is that St. Bernardine's has a rich history in working on patients with valve disease. We do both aortic valve replacement, mitral valve repair and replacement, and also right sided tricuspid procedures as well.
Cardiology itself has gone through a whole series of changes because of new technology, and St. Bernardine's has been forward-thinking and kept up with the technology. In this era now, with percutaneous valves we are again echoing what we have done in the past.
Minimally invasive surgery is here, and it's here to stay. Aortic valve replacement without opening up the chest, the procedure called TAVR is going to revolutionalize valve therapy. It's trans-aortic valve replacement however, it is placed through a catheter that's inserted in the artery in the groin and the chest doesn't need to be opened and that's how the valve's placed. There are two other routes that the surgeons can do, but they're also minimally invasive. You don't have to have your whole chest cracked open.
The most important thing anybody should know about St. Bernardine's is you'd want to go to a place that does a big volume of procedures and it's done by a select group of people. The surgeons, cardiologists, ICU nurses, the step-down units, the rehab center, it's all one continuum and comprehensive package. St. Bernardine's offers that complete package.
