"My cardiologist recommended me to have my mitral valve repaired by Dr. Gillinov. My cardiologist is my personal friend, and I knew she would only choose the best for me. Also, she knew I'd otherwise wait and wait and wait, since I had no symptoms.

"In July 2019, I was diagnosed with mitral valve regurgitation and was recommended to have surgery within the next 4 to 5 months. I did extensive research on the procedure that would be required to fix the issue. After educating myself, I produced a list of factors I would consider to determine the doctor and the hospital in which I would like to undergo heart surgery.

Through my research I found that I may be a candidate for robotics surgery. With that in mind, a robotics surgeon became one of the factors. After communicating with Dr. Gillinov's staff, I was impressed with each person's helpfulness, kindness, and professionalism. After Dr. Gillinov reviewed my prior tests, it was determined that surgery was needed.

My surgery and testing was scheduled and thereafter, everything was synchronized like a well-oiled machine. After my tests were completed, Dr. Gillinov met with my family and me to review my test results in great detail and in terminology that could be understood. He made us feel very comfortable with asking questions and he spent a lot of time with us and did not seem rushed. Most importantly, during this meeting, Dr Gillinov informed me if all went as expected, he would be performing the robotics surgery.

Dr. Gillinov's warm, positive, confident personality, along with his caring attitude, was easy to detect. He has a heart to help people; something you cannot teach or learn. While in the surgical room and being prepared for surgery his outstanding team of doctors and nurses (9 or 10 team members) could not have been more considerate. Each person was preparing their area for surgery. Many, if not all, greeted me. Before being sedated, Dr. Gillinov called a huddle, the team of doctors nurses surrounded the table and reported their responsibilities. Dr. Gillinov closed out the huddle, saying "our team is the best, we know what we are doing, and we are good at it; and we got this!"

The surgery was very successful and I was able to have the robotics surgery. After surgery, the care was absolutely amazing. From the ICU to the step down unit. There was absolutely no step down in professionalism, kindness, or caring heart. From the nurses to the cleaning staff to the food delivery folks, you could tell that everyone was proud to be a part of the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Gillinov and his staff were always prompt in response to questions and concerns. After returning home, which is about a six hour drive from Cleveland, I was experiencing nerve pain in my leg from the bypass machine incision. I contacted Dr. Gillinov by email and he responded within 10 minutes. This, too, was handled promptly and professionally.

With all of this being said, if I had to repeat this process knowing what I know now, I would walk to Cleveland to receive the extraordinary services of Dr. Gillinov, his personal staff, nurses, and hospital support staff. They are number one in the world for a reason. It starts with the amazing culture, climate, and pride. As soon as you walk into the Cleveland Clinic doors, you feel the positive vibes.

"I had a complicated surgery--but I'm almost 5 months out, and my cardiologist says my heart looks good. Dr. Gillinov was optimistic he could do a repair instead of replacement, and he did. His bedside manner is very good--answered all my questions, was encouraging, and was a comforting presence. Not warm and fuzzy, but that's fine. What really made me appreciate him is that he was very patient and watchful as my heart took its own sweet time to stabilize. I was 5 days in the ICU right after surgery and the electrophysiologists wanted to put in a pacemaker. He held them off and said just give her heart some more time. His reputation as a highly intelligent and caring surgeon is well deserved. The surgery went very well and I have no problem walking 45 min within the first week. The surgery outcome was so well that criteria were met to discharge me on the 3rd day post op. No temporary AFIB or Pump Head syndrome coming out from surgery. Cleveland Clinic is a well oiled organization and one thing very evident is that they have excellent cardiac staff all around from doctors, nurses, office manager, medical technicians, wheel chair transporters, janitorial, physical therapists and even the lady taking meal orders. My cardiologist is very surprised that I decided to go out of town to Cleveland Clinic to have the surgery instead of doing it at the local heart center of excellence. In the pre-surgery consultation, Dr. Gillinov answered all my questions and even offered more information at the end. He visited me post surgery in the cardiac ICU and also the step down unit. Dr. Gillinov even replied to my email within 8 min on a weekend! Surprisingly, the most pain post-surgery is actually the sore throat and not at the incision sites. Dr. Abdullah (anesthesiologist) did a swell job with the local nerve blockers in the chest. Pain is relatively tolerable for a major surgery. Within a couple days, was only down to extra strength Tylenol to manage pain. Completely weened off pain medication on the second week post-surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Gillinov and Cleveland Clinic for the robotic mitral valve repair. In a time of anxiety leading to surgery, the post-surgery experience with Dr. Gillinov and CCF was many times better than anticipated."

He was awesome, performed repair of mitral after a local cardiologist told me come back in a year after a stent. Prior doctor had placed two stents in my LAD, told me my mitral was a 2. I was good to go, come back in a year. I got no better, to the Cleveland Clinic I traveled.

After some research which is not always easy to obtain because not all doctors' review are complete or transparent, I would say, Dr Gillinov probably does more mitral valve repairs in a week, certainly a month, than most do in a year. Although the recovery time is longer, specifically with driving or being in the front seat of a car, and lifting, these things are small potatoes. My incision six months after was barely visible. Today, 4 years later, I cannot see it from inches away.

My cardiologist tells me my murmur which I have had all my life, is not to be heard. Although I am still atrial fib, that was not unexpected as I had been been so for 36 years and it Is hard to be converted back to a sinus rhythm after all that time. I have had 3 major surgeries in my life. All three of my surgeons are heroes to me. I shattered a hip and my orthopedic surgeon who specializes in trauma put Humpty Dumpty (I am not overweight) back together again. My vascular surgeon was brought into the operating room at the last moment after I nearly bled out due to an aneurysm on my SMA (diagnosed as SAM - segmental medioysis). He saved my life on the table I was told and can infer. Both were amazing hospital experiences. Recovery was arduous. I know something about this.

My experience at the Cleveland Clinic was entirely different. It was scheduled. No surprises. I flew to Cleveland alone and was met there by my son who came in from Colorado and a best friend from college who flew in from Florida. He flew back with me to Philadelphia. It was the most surreal and futuristic experience I have been through. The pre-op series of tests and meeting with my Cleveland cardiologist and Dr Gillinov flowed almost like I was the only patient. There is no clutter. It is like being on a Star Trek movie set or even the Starship Enterprise itself. It was an out of body experience from start to finish. Four years after I still marvel at the experience of a lifetime which rivals anything I have seen or done. All that said, I must tell you, that although the facility, the hospital which is a sprawling complex of 10's of buildings, one more amazing than the next, in most most every way is state of the art, the operating room I recall during my brief time there prior to being anesthetized, looked very much dated , with all the wires, tubes and hoses exposed in full view, with machines from prior decades. This was comforting as well. I felt at home not knowing if would wake. I woke.

Perhaps the operating rooms have been updated. I hope you are not disappointed. What I can you is that if you are in need of the care which is provided by Dr Gillinov and the Cleveland Clinic, and you are so lucky to have the opportunity to schedule your operation or procedure there, you are most fortunate. I highly recommend Dr Gillinov and take this opportunity to thank him again. I have had no reason to return for a follow-up. I have no doubt my life has been extended many years if not decades. "First, I loved The Patient's Guide to Heart Valve Surgery by Adam Pick. I can still say this as an RN with 40 years of experience. It was in Adam's book I first read about Dr. Gillinov and the more I investigated, the more impressed I became. Since I was basically asymptomatic, I was comfortable getting on his waiting list. Most importantly, he was confident that I was a good candidate for a minimally invasive procedure... an option my local cardiologist and CT surgeon were completely against (only because they don't do min-invasive, I suspect). I had a wonderful interview with Dr. Gillinov who not only treated me as a patient, but as a colleague - which was greatly appreciated. My recovery was easy and my post-op interaction with him was minimally required. My outcome was essentially perfect and recovery uncomplicated. "After considerable research at HeartValveSurgery.com's Surgeon Finder and based on my cardiologist's recommendation, I decided to have my surgery performed by Dr. Marc Gillinov, MD.

My main reasons were:

Compared to other surgeons, Dr. Gillinov appeared to have the most experience with robotic and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Gillinov seemed to specialize in mitral repair/replacement I was impressed that Robin Williams had chosen to have surgery performed by Dr. Gillinov.

Dr. Gillinov was mentioned in several places in Adam's book. The testimonials in the Surgeon Finder were all highly positive. When I met Dr. Gillinov, I was really impressed. He was open, honest and forthright. He explained the procedure in terms I could understand, showed me pictures from the echo of the extent of regurgitation.

I left my session with him reassured that I was in extremely good hands. I saw Dr. Gilinov just before the surgery in the OR and, once again, Dr. Gillinov exhibited a calm, confident manner which once again was very reassuring.

My surgery went off without a hitch in less than 2 hours. After 2 days in ICU and 2-3 days in step down care, I was released from the hospital and returned to Columbus. I saw Dr. Gillinov once again before I was released from the hospital.

I had some Atrial fibrillation after the surgery which resolved after a few weeks, which Dr. Gillnov predicted would happen. I have periodic episodes of atrial tachycardia which has been controlled by medication. I have a low ejection fraction of 30-35% which appears to be improving. During this period, I wanted to contact Dr. Gillinov about some of these complications and was wondering how to contact him. I finally decided to try to send him an email. I was really surprised and impressed when Dr. Gillinov responded to my email with a few hours and answered my questions.

In conclusion, I would strongly recommend Dr. Gillinov for anyone considering mitral valve surgery. I would also strongly recommend the Cleveland Clinic. The quality of care I received from the doctors and nurses at the Cleveland Clinic far exceeds anything I have experienced elsewhere."
