Dr. Justin Schaffer introduced himself and explained his close relationship with the doctor who was attempting to repair my valve with an intervention. Avoiding major surgery was no longer an option. He explained the extent of success of Baylor Scott and White and the major experience his surgery team had. He had been consistently successful with doing a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedure.

Dr. Schaffer was clear concise and drew a diagram of the challenges are and options. The two doctors sat down, designed and debated for long hours the most efficient procedure to give me best outcome. Both doctors had confidence in their team and support staff to erase any anxiety I had. Their success rate is the best in Texas and rated no 1.

Their goal was to get me to live to 100 like my mom. At 78, this was hitting the lottery as I always expected to die young in my 60's like my father's lineage. 7 out of 10 died early from high triglycerides and heart failure.

"Doctor Schaffer performed Open Heart Surgery (OHS) on me June 2, 2025 for Aortic Valve Replacement. The Doctor explained in detail the work that was going to be accomplished and what to expect after surgery. On surgery day preparation, the Nurses, Anesthesiologist and staff were great and everything went extremely well.

After surgery, I was sore but was never in any pain except for sneezing, coughing etc. The heart pillow is a must during the healing process. Doctor Schaffer did visit while in recovery to see how I was doing and answered questions to our understanding.

I was released on the 4th day after meeting with the Doctor. Recovery at home went better than expected. My chest incision healing went well with no problems. Once again, I had no pain, only soreness as the incision healed and only took Tylenol a few times. The heart pillow is a must while healing and the incentive spirometer to exercise the lungs are a great help (both provided).

"I met Dr. Justin Schaffer at The Heart Hospital Baylor, Plano, TX, with his calm, caring demeanor. It was obvious he had studied my records, was prepared to answer my questions, and was a master of the process to correct my issues. We talked. Amazing! A cow's valve. I felt so confident. But, the nursing staff at Baylor Scott & White Plano took charge. They found Dr. Schaffer, who had just completed a procedure. They must have acted fast because I was losing blood. They had to intubate me and open me up again.

Immediately upon meeting Dr. Schaffer, I knew I had the right surgeon and the right hospital, Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital in Plano, Texas. I went from being totally exhausted taking 15 steps, to gradually working my way up to 4 and 5 mile walks. I have co-morbidities, HOCM, Diabetes Type 2, and CAD-RAD3. But at 69... "I am 44 year old male. I had a dilated aortic root, grade 4 aortic insufficiency, and a mildly dilated left ventricle. I was fortunate enough to have found this by chance (before it turned into heart failure). My EF (ejection fraction) was still normal. I traveled to the Heart Hospital Baylor in Plano, TX from Arkansas (8 hours away). I was looking for an experienced surgeon to replace my aortic root and repair my aortic valve. While this was my "plan A", I also came here to cover my "plan B". Which was to have an On-X mechanical valve and conduit used, if the valve could not be repaired. So I was looking for a surgeon, who was not only experienced with aortic valve and root repairs, but who also had experience with the On-x mechanical aortic valves. That is just what I found with Dr. Schaffer and Dr. Brinkman. They did a great job. I am recovering well. I am three weeks postop and doing much better than I anticipated. Once they opened me up and got a good look at the valve, they discovered that they would not be able to repair it. The valve contained fenestrations, which were not seen on the TEE. These fenestrations caused the tissue to be too thin to be repaired. Although this complication was an unexpected occurrence, it was important to me to have both options covered just in case. I work in medical field, and I know that unexpected things do happen occasionally during surgery. I had surgery on a Tuesday. I was extubated fairly quickly (I barely remember it). The central lines and chest tubes were removed a few days later. If my INR had cooperated I would have got to leave that Saturday, but instead I was discharged on Monday once my INR was more therapeutic. Still pretty good for such a major surgery. Since I had a mechanical valve placed I will take Coumadin the rest of my life, but with this valve I will have to take much less. The valve was a little louder the first week, but I can barely hear it now. Occasionally, if I am sitting in a quiet room and sitting in the right position I can hear the click. Not bad at all. Dr. Schaffer came by every day and checked on me. I found him to have a great bedside manner and would highly recommend him. I don't believe I would be doing this well without their exceptional skill and expertise."

"In mid December 2016, I was diagnosed with Aortic Stenosis and was scheduled for surgery on Dec.29th. I first met Dr. Schaffer on the afternoon of Dec.28th, prior to my surgery the next morning. He explained in detail (using a model heart) just what was involved and when I left, I was confident I would be in good hands the next morning.

All went well and I had no problem with recovery. I saw Dr. Schaffer every day prior to my release one week later on Jan.4th.
