"Dr. Chikwe was fantastic! She was able to put myself and family at ease with her way of explaining what was going to happen before, during and after the surgery.
I can't quite put my finger on it. But, she has this great way of making you feel like you are talking to someone you have known for years. That makes you ready for this life-changing procedure.
I can not recommend her enough!"
"When I found out I needed open heart surgery for severe mitral valve prolapse, I began researching hospitals & surgeons (with the help of this website!) and found that there were two top-rated hospitals and several surgeons with extensive expertise in mitral valve repair/replacement in the LA area.
As soon as I met with Dr. Joanna Chikwe at Cedars-Sinai, I knew this was my surgeon. She clearly explained my issue and showed me exactly what was happening with my heart, answered all my questions (and kept asking if I had more), explained why robotic surgery was likely my best option, and was extremely empathetic and kind. I did meet with another surgeon with a stellar reputation at another top hospital, but I literally couldn't understand much of what he was telling me because he used surgeon-speak without making an effort to communicate in lay terms to an obvious non-expert. Considering Dr. Chikwe's expertise in my specific need and desire to help me clearly understand my situation, the choice was easy.
On February 4, I had robotic surgery with Dr. Chikwe and it went perfectly (not even trace regurgitation in a post-op test). At least one doctor from her team checked on me daily, and Dr. Chikwe was there the morning of Feb. 7, when I was to be released, reaffirming that the surgery had gone perfectly and I was ready to begin recovery at home.
The staff at Cedars was excellent, from the nurses to the physical therapist to all the other helpers. I had a private room (I believe all the rooms in that section are singles) and couldn't have been treated better. I met and heard about people traveling from all over the country to come to Cedars, and specifically to Dr. Chikwe, for surgery, and it's easy to understand why. I cannot recommend this surgeon and hospital highly enough. They are the very best.
But this review would be remiss if I didn't also mention the phenomenal care I got from Vivian Burkhart, Dr. Chikwe's nurse practitioner. Vivian is truly the best of the best — I can't think of a single person I've dealt with in the medical field in my life who comes close to Vivian's care, empathy, responsiveness, expertise, reassurance ... I could go on and on. Before and after surgery with Dr. Chikwe, Vivian is your main contact. When I had questions after I got home, she'd call or email me within an hour of my messages with answers, reassurance and direction. When I started having palpitations a few weeks after surgery, Vivian immediately booked an appointment with my cardiologist for a heart monitor and kept tabs on me through that process. My in-person visits before and after the surgery, after meeting Dr. Chikwe, were with Vivian, and under her care, I never doubted I was in the absolute best hands.
Finally, rounding out Dr. Chikwe's team is Mary Alvarado. Mary was my first contact and walked me through the process of getting my records to her so I could meet with Dr. Chikwe, then post-surgery handled all the documents for my work leave and state disability. I couldn't have gotten through the administrative demands without her.
In all, I recommend Dr. Chikwe and her team of providers with the utmost confidence. I cannot imagine finding a better team anywhere — and I'm sure people all over the country who have traveled to Cedars and Dr. Chikwe for their care agree. It may be strange, but I am actually sad that I'm coming to the end of my interactions with them. When you receive this level of care, which feels extremely rare, it's hard to let go (can they just keep taking care of me please?! Haha).
For anyone looking for a valve surgeon, best of luck to you. This website helped me find the absolute best providers, and I'm sure it will help you, too. I'm now almost two months post-op, and I'm so glad I didn't put off this surgery. It went well, it's done, and now I'm working on getting back to "normal" life. Onward!"
