"I am a 49 year old male, diagnosed with BAV in 2017 after an annual checkup revealed a heart murmur and I was sent to a cardiologist. I had no symptoms and although I have struggled with being overweight my whole life, I have no other medical conditions.

I live a fairly active lifestyle, jogging 3-4 days a week, mountain biking, and golfing. I also work as a fleet mechanic in an oil refinery and my job includes heavy lifting requirements. So, when faced with the need for surgery I looked for alternatives to the standard sternotomy with a lengthy recovery time. The robotic assisted surgery involves holes/ports for the camera and surgical tools, but they do not cut through the breastbone, making the recovery and return to activity much faster.

After meeting multiple surgeons, I chose to have a robotic assisted bicuspid aortic valve replacement with a tissue valve replacement (27 mm Avalus Medtronic bovine) with Dr. Husam Balkhy at University of Chicago.

I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Balkhy, his surgical team, medical staff, and his administrative team. From start to finish, both my wife and I were very impressed with the communication, follow up and concern that Dr. Balkhy and his team showed for our experience. They answered all our questions, and we had a lot! All of the appointments and procedures leading up to the surgery were handled through his team, they scheduled, explained and checked in after each making sure we had everything we needed on each visit.

The compassion we were shown during our time at the hospital was notable. My wife was able to be with me the entire time after my surgery, letting her stay with me even in the ICU and sleep on the couch in the room, which was a comfort for both of us for her to be with me during such an anxiety inducing situation. Our experience with Dr. Balkhy and the rest of the medical staff at UChicago was excellent.

I'm just past my one year anniversary of the valve replacement and continue to be amazed at how much my life has improved after surgery. There are so many things that come more easily now that I didn't realize the calcified valve was impeding before.

I have more energy, my activity level has increased without feeling like I'm battling to breathe when I'm jogging. My workouts are so much more productive, and I've lost 40 pounds and couldn't be more grateful for these improvements to my life!

For anyone interested in the robotic assisted option…here's my experience. Surgery started at 9am and ran long, over 7 hours. My aortic valve was very calcified and had even started to calcify around the mitral valve. Dr. Balkhy couldn't believe how high my high activity level considering the condition of the valve.

The first night in the ICU was rough, they didn't extubate until after midnight because there a lot of output from the chest tube and they were concerned about bleeding in the chest cavity, so I was awake while on the vent for about 6 hrs, which was one of the scariest things I've ever experienced. Also during this initial recovery after surgery, my right leg was numb from the thigh down and of course being on the vent, I couldn't communicate this very well. Once I was able to get them to understand what I was feeling, they did a number of tests to confirm I had not had a stroke. They determined the numbness was due to the placement of the femoral line pressing on a nerve bundle and feeling should return with time. This is not a common issue, but they said it isn't completely unexpected.

Dr. Balkhy came to visit early that morning and explained that because they went through the right side of my chest, they had me laying on my side for the surgery and it was very possible that the femoral line (in through the groin) had been pressing on a nerve bundle that was causing the numbness and that it may take a while, but I should regain feeling once those nerves healed.

Day 1 in ICU recovery went fairly well, once I was extubated and we made some changes to the pain management, I was more comfortable. That afternoon they removed the central line, foley catheter and chest tubes and moved me to a regular room. Neuro came to recheck the numbness in my leg and confirmed that it was not stroke related as I didn't have weakness, just no feeling. I was able to get up and walk by that evening. I had to use a walker because my leg was still numb.

Day 2 was better as I actually got some sleep. They had a PT come in and get me up and moving, I was able to walk to the bathroom by myself and they removed the wires for the external pacemaker (apparently, they put these in for all open heart surgery patients, but fortunately they did not need to use them after my surgery). At this point, Dr. Balkhy and his team had been in multiple times over the 2 days and we determined that I was stable and would be much more comfortable at home recovering. So at 7:00 pm, just 48 hours after surgery, I was discharged.

Day 3 at home, I was able to shower, got adjusted to the meds routine, sleeping and getting around in the house. My right chest and arm looked like I went 10 rounds with an angry wolverine and my back and both shoulders were very sore. I reduced the pain medications to Tylenol and a muscle relaxer during the day and Tramadol at night. My right leg was still numb, but I could tell that I was very slowly getting feeling back.

Day 4… Jere's where I really knew I made the right choice with Dr. Balkhy. There were no real lifting restrictions since they didn't have to cut through my sternum, just to return to activity as tolerated based on pain. So my wife and I walked 15 mins around the block, I rode the exercise bike for 15 mins and even felt good enough to check on my golf swing by very cautiously chipping some balls in the backyard!

Day 7 was my 50th birthday and my wife took me out to lunch and to a car museum. I walked around for about 2 hours and then went home and needed a nap.

Day 28 I went golfing for the first time since surgery, still sore but I had full range of motion and didn't feel like I had restrictions based on pain. The numbness in my leg is significantly decreased, still some strange twinges and numb places, but nothing that restricts my activities.

Day 48 I was cleared to return to work full duty at 7 weeks post op.

Day 365 at one year post op, I am so grateful that I found Dr. Balkhy to do this surgery. I've had no complications with the heart valve or my continued recovery. I have 95% of the feeling in my leg now and only a few small places still have numbness, but that seems to continue to improve each month.

This has been quite an experience, but I couldn't be happier about the process and outcome!"

"Dr. Balkhy is the nicest and an unbelievably great surgeon. He did both the valve repair and double bypass surgery at the same time.

I have three pin hole scars on one side of my chest and 4 on the other side. I basically had no pain from those incisions. I had minor pain from the drainage tubes in the front of my chest and 2 larger incisions for those tubes. Most of my pain in the following 2 weeks was from the drainage incisions. I stopped taking any tramadol after 10 days and stopped Tylenol after 3 weeks.

14 days after the surgery I was able to drive myself to an eye doctor appointment. Anyone needing valve repair and/or bypass surgery should definitely consider The University of Chicago Medicine and Dr. Balkhy. It was the best decision I have ever made."

"I can't say enough good things about Dr. Balkhy, his team, and the results of my Mitral Valve repair surgery.

Using the DaVinci Robotic Surgery, I was out of the hospital after one night, within five days, I was on my bike riding 18-20 miles per day and within three weeks, hiking up to 6 miles per day in mountains in the Pacific Northwest.

For one year prior to my surgery, I would not have been able to do either of these. My energy level is up 50 % since surgery. I had five small incisions on my side where the robot arms go in, they were closed and healed within a few weeks. If I would have had the same repair through open heart surgery, I would have a very large scar on my chest and would need 2-3 months to recover with considerable pain. After one day in the hospital, I did not need any pain medications.

Dr. Balkhy and his team were very patient with all of my questions and thorough in helping me to understand all aspects of the procedure. While I knew the procedure was successful almost immediately waking up after surgery, today it was confirmed by an Echocardiogram and X-Ray - Dr. Balkhy and his team that I met with said the valve was working perfectly and there were no more leaks. As I indicated I knew that right after surgery as I could tell my energy was back and there was no more shortage of breath when I exert myself.

In my research, I found that Dr. Balkhy was one of the most experienced surgeons in the US using Da Vince Robotics for heart valves, and he has completed over 2,000 surgeries. I highly recommend anyone needing heart valve surgery to research Da Vinci Robotics and Dr. Balkhy, you will be very glad you did."

"I had a mitral valve repair in January that was not completely successful with still moderate regurgitation and my doctor referred me to Dr. Balkhy probably because I said I did not want my ribs cracked. After consulting with Dr, Balkhy and listening to his explanation on my condition and the robotic surgery, I was so impressed with him that I told him, if need be, go ahead and crack my ribs. My daughter, who was accompanying me, and I were very impressed with his manner, sense of humor, knowledge, and telling us like it was and what to expect.

To make a long story short (I fancy myself a writer; I published a book on my Whipple operation in 2012, I wrote a piece on this operation) my operation took place on Monday morning, 8/14/2023. We were told by one of his students that normally, Dr. Balkhy changes from scrubs to his suit when he meets family after the operation, but he scared my daughters by coming out in his scrubs to tell them that I was taking a longer time to wake up, but not to worry. I did wake up with a lot of drainage tubes protruding from my chest area and a plastic tube down my throat for some reason, but no pain. Dr. Balkhy did come out in his suit and talked with my daughters assuring them that everything went well, and a full recovery was expected.

It did go well because the next day, Tuesday, 8/15/2923, the nurse came into my room and told me they were waiting for some tech to arrive and remove the plastic tube as well as waiting for discharge papers; I was going home!

Before being discharged Dr. Balkhy met with me and my two daughters explaining everything, and I jokingly asked him if it would be alright to sky dive with the new clips, and he said fine only if I send him a picture. As with the first time we met him, there was a lot of laughter in the room. Today, yesterday, 10/11/2023, we met with him for a checkup and chest X-Ray. A couple of weeks ago I had an echo and brought the disc and report in with me for him to look over and was told everything was normal and I wouldn't have to see him again. Again, we said goodbye and left in laughter.

It's been a few weeks now and I'm almost back to my normal self; on Monday night I practice Filipino martial arts, on Tuesday nights I have karate class (I am a black belt), on Wednesday night I have tap class with my daughter, and on Thursday night I would have my advance tap class, but they switched the night to Tuesday, so I get to rest before mowing my lawn and three of my neighbors just to be neighborly. I would have a great deal of difficulty with these activities if it weren't for Dr. Balkhy, by the way, I can't even find where he entered my chest. I would heartily recommend him to anyone with a heart condition."

"On March 28, 2023, I got a robotic valve repair surgery to be done in another state & doctor and unfortunately, it didn't happen due to my iliac vein ruptured before they start the surgery. So, I ended up with robotic ports placed and unplaced, and I got a damaged right groin to operate again.

"I am a 54 year old male, and found out during a routine physical that I had a heart murmur. The attending physician ordered an echocardiogram where severe mitral valve regurgitation was detected that required corrective surgery. "Eighteen months post surgery and I have logged over 1,500 miles on my mountain bike and, as I approach 50 years old, am in as good of shape as I have been at any point over the last 15 years.

Despite my cardiologist's hesitation, I did not want to proceed with my surgeon and hospital choice for mitral valve repair without first investigating the robotic option. Dr. Balkhy and his team were great from the beginning, willing to take as much time as I needed to answer questions. "One word to describe my experience at the University of Chicago Hospital: Amazing!

Everyone, from Lois the receiving nurse, to Arnold, and Megan, two of my excellent nurses, to McKenzie, one of my nurse practitioners, and Dr. Abumerry and Dr Tong, my anesthesiologists — The staff had impeccable bedside manner and demonstrated expert level professionalism and care.

The procedure itself – – well I don't remember it – – but when it was over, and I woke up, I had to ask " when do we start?". Recovery was quick: I was able to spend three hours working on a status report that I had to do very next morning after my surgery! My mitral valve was replaced with a cow tissue valve, and I'm happy to say, 30 days later, I am fully recovered and able to complete my full workout, which includes an hour of walking , weights, and even pull-ups: I did 11 today!

I did not miss even one hour of work the week of my surgery, and I have to thank Dr. Balkhy and his wonderful staff for that.

"I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Balkhy and his team perform my mitral valve repair and ablation surgery. I had a severely leaking valve with regurgitation for years, when full blown afib also kicked in it was no longer considered manageable. Multiple surgeons said the valve was not salvageable and would need to be replaced. All via the full open chest with a sternotomy, meaning a lifetime of blood thinner and a lengthy recovery. "I am so thankful that I had my mitral valve repaired robotically by Dr Balkhy and his team. Dr Balkhy and his team took care of me every step of the way from the initial appointment all the way to follow up questions during my recuperation. When I came for my initial visit Dr Balkhy and his staff took the time to explain the process and answer any questions I had. I left the office feeling that I knew what would happen and that Dr Balkhy and his staff were more than capable of doing a good job.

Dr Balkhy prepared me for what to expect after the surgery so I wouldn't be caught by surprise. I was amazed at how quickly I recovered from the surgery. With respect to day to day activities, including driving, work, and my energy level, I was back to normal in about 2 ½ weeks. Before my surgery I worked out regularly. At 6 weeks I am already doing 40 minute aerobic workouts and light weights. Needless to say it will take more time to get back where I was but I am well on my way. Here are the details. My recovery from the surgery has been very simple and fast. I had the surgery done on a Monday, starting at 7:30 AM. I woke up and had my breathing tube removed at about 4PM that day. I was sitting up in a chair about 2 hours later. I spent the night in the ICU and had all the remaining tubes removed the next morning (Tuesday) and was moved to a step down room. Once I got moved I took a walk around the floor. I felt a bit unstable, but other than that I felt good. I had some pain at the incision in my groin area and then a portion of my right chest under the rib cage felt sore. I only needed to take half of the pain killer dose to control my pain enough so I could do the breathing exercises.

I did not spend any time in bed on Tuesday until it was time to go to sleep. I took numerous walks around the floor. By my second walk I didn't feel the least bit unstable. I was walking slowly for me but I found that each time I walked I felt a little better.

I was released on Wednesday. I had very few restrictions. I wasn't supposed to drive or do any intense exercise or heavy lifting as long as I was on the pain killer. As it turned out I didn't take any of the pain killers once I got home. I simply took Advil. Upon arriving home I was able to walk just fine and go up and down steps fairly easily, though I did favor the side of my groin where the incision was located (but only during that first day and a half). Thursday was my first full day at home. I took Advil that day every 6 hours as directed on the package. I took 2 the next 2 days and after that I just took 1 each night before going to bed for another 3 days. After that I used ice on my groin for about 10 minutes in the evening for a few more days. I stayed home that first week, each day increasing the amount of walking I did. I have a Vivofit to track my steps. By the end of the week I was walking about 10,000 steps a day. As the week progressed the pain in the groin became less each day. The pain under the rib cage became more of a numbness and ache. Neither was very bad as shown by how little Advil I was taking.

I went back to work one week after my surgery – on Tuesday. I had my wife drive me on Tuesday, but after that I drove myself. I also worked from home on one day that week. My energy level was still low but I had no problem getting around, even walking up steps to the second floor. I was moving a bit slower than normal, but I felt well enough to get some work done that week. So that was the second week after my surgery.

By the middle of the third week (about 2 ½ weeks after my surgery) I felt that my energy level was back to normal. I still had some aches, but nothing that required medication or even ice. At this point I was walking over 15,000 steps a day and I even began to get on an Elliptical and Treadmill machine at the gym. I started at 5 minutes and felt fine during the exercise and also felt fine the next day. The second time I increased my time to 15 minutes and still felt fine so I continued using the machines about every other day. Initially I didn't allow my heart rate to get over 100 bpm. I gradually allowed myself to work harder and raise my heart rate more. At my one month follow-up visit with Dr. Balkhy, he reinforced that I did not have any restrictions and that I could do whatever I wanted to do. After that I got more serious about reconditioning my heart. I started working out on the Elliptical hard enough to get my heart rate over 130 bpm for at least 10 minutes. I also began doing light weights.

It is now 6 weeks since my surgery. Today I worked out on the Elliptical for 40 minutes, keeping my heart rate over 130 bpm for 35 minutes of that time. I have also progressed with my weights a bit.

Based on how I am progressing, I have very positive expectations to be back in shape in the near future."

I have for most of my life worked out everyday and have logged over 34,000 miles running life to date. Needless to say when the valve started acting up this past winter and tests showed it was time to have the valve fixed I was not ready to hear this news. I had to find the option that would be the most successful and get me back to active the quickest.

Because I knew this day was coming I had over the years researched the procedures, methods, and hospitals that performed them. My research kicked into a higher gear especially regarding the use of robotics to perform the surgery. Now was the time to set up and interview various surgeons to determine the best one to operate on me. The experience with other hospitals and surgeons without mentioning names was not a positive experience. This was not true with Dr. Balkhy and the rest of his team. From the beginning they all made me feel very comfortable and worked with me to answer any and all questions. Because of my extensive research I had some very specific questions and was always treated with respect and none of the condescension or arrogance that I saw elsewhere.

After deciding this was the place to go and that Dr. Balkhy and his team were the right people to get it done we quickly worked out a schedule. I made a quick trip to Chicago a week prior to surgery for some pre-testing that was required. This day at the hospital was also a very positive experience. Everyone was so nice and professional. There wasn't any negative experience at all and no wait times I would consider out of the ordinary. Everyone from the valets, receptionist, nurses and technicians did an exceptional job. The day of the surgery and afterward continued the experience. I was so nervous, but check-in was painless, and everything moved along well. Everyone along the way explained things thoroughly, allowed time for any questions, and showed genuine concern for me and my family the entire way.

The surgery itself went very well and from what I understand text book. While I don't remember anything my family was well communicated with the entire day. Some many hours later they were able to meet me after waking in the ICU. I was well taken care of while in the ICU and was able to move to a step down unit the following afternoon. I spent one day in the step down unit and was visited by Dr. Balkhy that afternoon. I was very happy to hear from him in detail how things went and to find out I was on schedule to head home the next day. Who would have ever guessed you could leave the hospital after major heart surgery after only two days.

Since arriving home the recovery has been nothing short of phenomenal. I never had to take any pain medication stronger than Tylenol. The first day home I was able to go for multiple short walks. By the third day I was able to walk 1.5 miles. By the 5th day I was able to add work in my garden and other light chores. After 10 days I was able to jog half mile at the end of my daily walk. By two weeks I was able to rototill my garden and mow the lawn. I was able to drive myself 6 hours up north to go fishing for multiple days. Since then I have been able to add more extensive yard work like trimming evergreen trees and building a stone retaining wall. 21 days since arriving home I was able to jog 2.5 miles in 25:05 with no issues. Today I really feel almost back to normal and even the five small incisions are completely healed. Even with my research the results have far exceeded anything I could have hoped for at this point.

I can't express enough the gratitude I feel towards Dr.Balkhy and his team at University of Chicago Medical Center. His skill and that of the entire team and the professionalism of everyone that I came in contact with made this traumatic experience into an extremely positive event for me. I could not more highly recommend this team and the robotic option to anyone having to undergo this surgery."

"This is my second time seeing Dr. Balkhy to have my mitral valve repaired in the last 14 months . The first time in March of 2014 for a mitral valve prolapse, which caused a severe mitral valve regurgitation. The care I received by Dr Balkhy and his staff bar none where first rate. I went in for this second surgery May 18 th to have the valve repaired. The day after surgery Dr Balkhy met with me and explained in detail what the issue was and what he did to repair it. He showed me a comprehensive video of the before and after of my valve, and explained what he did to repair it. "Initially I had a certain amount of anxiety of having any cardiac surgery. That may have been because of a year I spent working as a RN in a cardiovascular intensive care unit, doing recovery of open hearts.

I really did not want to have my chest cracked open. At the University of Chicago I was able to meet with Dr Husam Balkhy and members of his team and discussed Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery and mitral valve repair. All of my questions were answered. Dr. Balkhy's demeanor was calm and reassuring. Most important, I received the impression from the other RNs, that in the operating theater that Dr Balkhy, even as the surgeon, is a team player.

With Robotic Surgery I was out of Intensive care in less than a day, up and about briefly on the second day, and fully ambulatory up and about pacing on the third day and discharge later that afternoon. The care that I received was excellent. At home, I do activity as tolerated and have some discomfort to wound sites only if I over exceed myself. I can, with confidence, recommend Dr. Husam Balkhy and his team at University of Chicago for Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery for any cardiac procedures."

"My problem was the surgical removal of a fibroelastoma on the aortic valve. I first went to Dr. Balkhy for a 2nd opinion regarding the removal of the offending mass. It was immediately & impressively apparent that Dr. Balkhy not only "listened" to me but also "heard" my questions and concerns.

I was so impressed with his answers and willingness to have a detailed "conversation" with me about my problem, the surgical procedure itself and the post-op situation that I immediately decided to have him do the surgery. His demeanor is one of gentleness and quiet confidence with not a hint of arrogance. My son picked me up at the hospital (mandatory) and after dropping him off at his house, I drove home. Dr Balkhy had said I was cleared to drive as long as I was not taking the narco pain medication. I did not need/take any opioid after Friday afternoon so I was good-to-go. I went to work Monday morning. The only noticeable effect was a certain degree of fatigue near days end lasting perhaps 2 weeks.

"Dr. Balkhy and his extremely competent & personable staff were nothing short of excellent. At the initial appointment, I met with (nurses) Susan Arnsdorf & Dorothy Krienbring. Two compassionate & accomplished women who explained the role each of them played within the team. Then the doctor came in. He did not rush the appointment & had a very down-to-earth way about him.

It is important to mention, that I had gotten 3 other opinions before finding out about Port Access Aortic Valve Replacement. I had been told by all the previous physicians that I needed to have my sternum "cracked open". However, all 3 of them were wrong - this was not the case.

Dr. Bahlky was able to replace my valve without cutting through my sternum. Thus, the stress to my body, the healing process and the scar were far less extensive. I am so happy I decided to get a 4th opinion and that I found this wonderful team.

"I had know for many years that I had a problem with my mitral valve but had only minor problems. I am 76. Recently I noticed that after just a little exercise or normal activities, I would become extremely exhausted and breathed heavy for a short period of time.

After consultation with my personal Doctor, I was referred to a heart surgeon who suggested surgery. I am also a polio survivor and for the past several years have experienced living with post-polio. I am very weak, poor balance, and easily fatigued. He suggested that because of my health conditions, and open heart surgery, I should consider selling my home and moving into assisted living.
