St. Elizabeth performs approximately 550 cardiac surgeries per year exclusively at our Edgewood campus. Our HVI team practices in a new 67,000 square-foot building, employing a programmatic approach including multi-disciplinary case conferences and specialty clinics (such as the Advance Heart Valve Clinic), and onsite patient access to services including cardiac rehab and diagnostic testing. Our physicians are engaged in clinical research, teaching, and community outreach.
Led by a team of cardiologists and surgeons who collaborate to determine the most suitable approach for each patient, the Structural Heart and Valve Center at St. Elizabeth Healthcare offers advanced treatments for heart valve disease. This includes both traditional open-heart surgery and minimally invasive procedures. For instance, minimally invasive mitral valve repair or replacement can be performed through a small incision on the right side of the chest, and the Mitra-Clip™ device can be used for those ineligible for surgery by reducing leakage in the mitral valve.

Additionally, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) offers an alternative for individuals who cannot undergo open surgery or pose a moderate risk, addressing aortic stenosis through a minimally invasive cardiac catheterization procedure. Furthermore, valvuloplasty is available to enhance blood flow by using a balloon to open the aortic, mitral, or pulmonary valves. If minimally invasive approaches are not viable, the center's surgeons are proficient in traditional open-heart surgery for aortic and mitral valve repair or replacement, ensuring tailored treatment plans for optimal outcomes.
