As one of the highest volume and most experienced transcatheter aortic heart valve replacement (TAVR) programs in the nation, we are extremely proud of the many state-of-the-art transcatheter heart valve options (minimally invasive heart valve replacement procedures) that we offer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, including options for the aortic, mitral and tricuspid valves. These minimally invasive options offer shorter length of hospital stay, fewer complications, shorter healing time and smaller incisions. For open aortic valve and open mitral valve procedures, operative mortality is well below national averages at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Since the first transcatheter heart valve procedure was performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 2008, we have achieved tremendous growth in both the number of procedures performed and in our clinical trials offerings in this field. We offer a variety of commercially available (FDA approved) TAVR procedures and clinical trial options for the aortic valve, allowing us to tailor treatment precisely to the individual patient’s needs.

Hi, my name is Maggie Simons and I am the heart valve clinic coordinator for Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

I am a nurse and I am here to assist with the coordination of care for patients who need heart valve therapy.

I have 29 years of cardiac nursing experience. I began my career at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1991 working in the cardiac surgery operating rooms. In 2006, with the establishment of Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, I became the clinical nurse manager of the cardiac surgery operating rooms. During the 12 years that I managed the cardiac surgery operating rooms, we advanced our program to include high-risk heart valve surgery with or without atrial fibrillation, heart transplantation and transcatheter heart valve procedures for the aortic, mitral and tricuspid valves.

In 2018, as the heart valve coordinator for Northwestern Memorial Hospital, my clinical focus changed to coordinating patient care and monitoring both clinical outcomes and research trials for the heart valve surgery patient.
